For Photographers – Contracts

Virginia Wedding Photographer : Stephen Gosling Photography

The first thing I want to say is that I am under no illusion that people read my blog, let alone other photographers.  I in no way think that the way I do things is the correct way and I am not writing these posts to tell people how to shoot or how to run their businesses.  I am however going to be writing about my experiences; my failures, my successes, etc.  If these posts help anyone, great!  If not; no big deal.

You need to cover your ass!

If you’re a photographer of any kind, not just a wedding photographer, BUT ESPECIALLY IF YOU’RE A WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER, you need to have contracts for every shoot/project/job you do!

If your ass is not covered, you’ll lose it!

You need to find someone to help you write a legally binding contract that will protect you and your subjects (couples).  Everyone needs to know what they are responsible for and what is expected of them.  If they don’t; then that is where mistakes happen and where unhappy clients come from.

There are plenty of free templates out there to get you started and that is where I got my first contract from many years ago.  I found an online template that seemed to have everything I thought I needed and then I made changes to that to suit my needs.  I had no issues with it, but it just didn’t seem to cover everything I wanted it to and so I contacted a professional.  Just think about it.  We, as photographers, hate it when we lose business to so called amateurs.  We bemoan people for not using professional photographers when they need professional quality images.  The same works in this scenario. Unless you moonlight as a lawyer; you don’t know if your contract is legally binding or full of loop-holes that will bite you in the ass someday.  So contact a professional!!!

I use Katy Carrier of Carrier and Associates.  She is an attorney who caters to the creative industry so she is perfectly equipped to help anyone in the wedding industry.  If you need some legal advice or contract help; give her a shout!  You won’t be sorry!
