Virginia Wedding Photographer : Stephen Gosling Photography
The first thing I want to say is that I am under no illusion that people read my blog, let alone other photographers. I in no way think that the way I do things is the correct way and I am not writing these posts to tell people how to shoot or how to run their businesses. I am however going to be writing about my experiences; my failures, my successes, etc. If these posts help anyone, great! If not; no big deal.
What’s in a name? Lots!!! Your business name is your call out to the world letting them know you are here and ready to help them.
Now I want to make it clear than I am not saying that your name needs to be the best and most unique thing since sliced bread. But what I am saying is that your name needs to be;
a) Representative of you
b) Not stupid
Here’s what I mean… When I say that your business name needs to be representative of you; it needs to be about you. For example; my name is Stephen Gosling, so my business being called Stephen Gosling Photography makes complete sense. It says who I am; Stephen Gosling, and it says what I do; Photography. Plain, simple, to the point. Now if was trying to be creative I could maybe have called my business British Photography or English Imagery… Because again it would have said something about who I am (British/English) and it would have said something about what I do (Photography/Imagery). But I like my name being on my business, I feel like because it is my name that it holds me accountable. And I like that.
As to the name not being stupid; here is what I mean… Do not spell words incorrectly. For example; if you are using the word EXPRESSION in your business name, for the love of all that is holy, do not spell is XPRESSION. Similarly if you are using the word EXPOSURE (which can be common in the photography industry), do not spell it XPOSURE. It just makes me think you’re an idiot. And to really drive the point home. If you business has an s on the end of a word; like IMAGES for example, do not, DO NOT, spell is IMAGEZ! I know it was big in the 90’s to have X’s and Z’s in words to make them cooler, but you know what; it didn’t make them cooler then, and it certainly doesn’t make them cooler now! Also, don’t be cringe worthy. Do not name your business something like Beautiful Moments Photography or Wonderful Memories Images. Those types of names just make me think you’re working in the 19th century for people who have more money than sense. They sound hokey and amateurish (again; in my opinion).
That’s it, just my 2 cents on the subject. Take it or leave it and have a nice day!
