Washington DC Monuments & Memorials – Permits

Washington DC Wedding Photographer : Stephen Gosling Photography

Being a wedding photographer here in the nations capital can be both incredible & incredibly difficult at the same time.  On the one hand; we have stunning monuments and memorials to use as backdrops for our wedding photos.  On the other hand, we have bureaucracy and hoops to jump through if we are to use these wonderful backdrops correctly (legally).

If you want to shoot at one (or more) of the DC monuments then you are technically supposed to get a a permit.  It is important to know that the permit does not give you free range over the monument, allowing you to do whatever you want to do, but it does allow you on certain parts of the monument where you can take your photographs.  A quick example; if you get a permit to shoot at the Lincoln Memorial, then you are allowed to shoot on the front steps and around the outside of the monument by the columns.  YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED to go inside the monument to take pictures right next to Lincoln.  The same is to be said for the Jefferson Memorial.  You can be on the steps and on the outside with the columns, but not on the inside by the man himself.

I am by no means an expert when it comes to the permit process but for those of you needing one, visit this website…  http://www.nps.gov/nama/planyourvisit/permits.htm. And I believe that for wedding photos, this is the permit you will need… http://www.nps.gov/nama/planyourvisit/upload/10-931-filming-short-2013-NAMA-Address-new-costse.pdf

As of July fifteenth the price of a permit went up from $50, to $90 per monument.  So if you are planning to stop by four different monuments for your wedding photos, then you are technically supposed to get four permits!

Best of luck!!!
